A rotten job on a hot summer's day!

Today Martin decided to take all the ivy off the garage roof. He had killed it all off a few weeks ago but now it was just an unsightly mess and needed to be removed. Suffice it to say that it was a very hot day. I hadn't intended to get involved but then fear for my seed bed made me take an interest. That heap on the lawn is the dead ivy after Martin had hacked it with a chain saw. Fortunately he mowed the lawn earlier so it was easy to deal with. When I came home from work it was still there so I put it into blue bags for the collection tomorrow. Not a job I relished! But at least we now have a secure garage roof. Ivy is so invasive! It goes in one hole and comes out three feet further down!

This is a view of the cleared lawn and the weeded blackcurrant bushes. The forget-me-knots had finished so I decided first thing this morning while it was cool to weed this bed. I expect I will get lots of baby plants next Spring and even before then. On June 1st on Gardener's Tips blog there was a post about weeding which said and I quote roughly...that a weed is a plant which isn't in it's right place. And this is so true. I love Forget-Me-Knots but they will seed all over the place and I will have to harden my heart to get rid of some of them. It is because I have been soft in the past that my garden is oozing with violets! They are everywhere!

  1. That does sound like quite a job! We've been having hot weather here too. I know what you mean about forget-me-nots, I hate pulling them too, but just like the violets that are everywhere they will eventually take over. They both have such sweet little flowers, probably that's why we hate to pull them!

  2. If Martin is finished ripping out the ivy, send him over here to attack the rest of mine, terrorizing my garden. I pay well ... food/wine :) and we can discuss violets & forget-me-nots! Thanks for popping over ... I love your site :)

  3. What a job! Well at least you relax now that it's done. I have some lilies of the valley that have spread EVERYWHERE. I love them in the right spot, but they are so invasive. I keep pulling them up and they keep showing up. Sounds like your violets.

  4. Ellie May I would love to swap my violets and forget-me-nots for your lily of the valley. Mine have a hard time growing! I think I have three! Joey I think that was Martin's main effort for the year! :-) Catherine you are so right. It's because they are actual flowers that makes it so hard to pull them up! Thank you all for commenting. Val

  5. Well done, I loathe ivy! Have it growing up so many trees and keep meaning to tackle them. Good luck keeping it at bay.
